Box elder bug problem in Gatineau, Val-des-Monts or the Outaouais region?

Every fall, many homeowners in Gatineau, Val-des-Monts, Cantley, Chelsea, and throughout the Outaouais notice the sudden appearance of hundreds, even thousands, of small black and red insects on the exterior walls of their homes.

These are often box elder bugs, a very common insect in Quebec that becomes particularly visible as winter approaches.

While they generally cause no damage to building structures, their presence in large numbers can quickly become invasive when they attempt to enter homes to overwinter.

How to identify a box elder bug?

The box elder bug is relatively easy to identify thanks to its distinctive colouring.

Key characteristics include:

  • Length: approximately 10 to 14 mm;
  • Black body;
  • Red or orange lines on the wings;
  • Elongated and flat shape;
  • Slow movement when exposed to sunlight.

Young stages (nymphs) are often bright red with some black markings.

They are frequently observed on sun-exposed walls, windows, fences, tree trunks, and warm building surfaces.

Why do box elder bugs invade your home?

In fall, these insects seek sheltered places to survive winter temperatures. Residences exposed to sun, particularly south- or west-facing facades, are often very attractive to them.

They can infiltrate through:

  • Cracks in exterior cladding;
  • Window frames;
  • Door surrounds;
  • Soffits;
  • Vents;
  • Openings around conduits and cables.

Once inside walls or attics, they generally remain inactive until warmer temperatures return.

Are box elder bugs dangerous?

The good news is that box elder bugs generally represent no danger to occupants.

They do not sting, bite, transmit diseases, or damage wood or structures.

The main problem is their presence in very large numbers.

When crushed, they can leave stains on certain surfaces, emit an unpleasant odor, and soil curtains and window sills.

Their repeated presence can become frustrating, particularly when they reappear year after year.

Why does the problem return every year?

Box elder bugs tend to use the same overwintering sites year after year.

A home that has already provided suitable shelter is more likely to attract them again in subsequent seasons.

Factors that contribute to their presence include:

  • Sun-exposed facades;
  • The presence of box elder trees or other maple trees nearby;
  • Cracks and openings in the building envelope;
  • Wall voids that provide suitable overwintering conditions.

Without preventive measures, the problem often returns each fall.

What should you do if you have box elder bugs?

When box elder bugs appear indoors, using a vacuum cleaner is generally the simplest way to remove them.

We also recommend:

  • Avoid crushing them;
  • Inspect exterior openings;
  • Seal accessible cracks and gaps;
  • Maintain a well-sealed building envelope.

However, removing the visible insects does not address the root cause if entry points remain accessible.
