Earwigs are very common insects in Quebec. Although generally harmless, their presence in large numbers around or inside a home can quickly become a nuisance for many homeowners.
In Gatineau, Val-des-Monts, Cantley, Chelsea, and throughout the Outaouais region, earwigs are particularly active during warm, humid periods of the year. They are often observed in gardens, flowerbeds, under stones, mulch, or near foundations.
When they find favourable conditions, they can also enter homes in search of moisture and shelter.
How to identify an earwig?
The earwig is easy to identify thanks to the characteristic pincers at the end of its abdomen.
Key characteristics include:
- Length: generally 10 to 25 mm;
- Reddish-brown to dark brown body;
- Long, thin antennae;
- Wings folded under small rigid plates;
- Two curved pincers at the rear of the body.
They are frequently found under stones, flower pots, mulch, boards, in cracks, near foundations, and in damp basements.
Why do earwigs invade your home?
Earwigs are primarily attracted to:
- Moisture;
- Dark environments;
- Protected shelter;
- Organic matter.
They are particularly attracted to:
- Damp areas around foundations;
- Accumulations of dead leaves;
- Mulch;
- Gardens;
- Cracks in the building;
- Damp basements.
During periods of drought or heavy rainfall, earwigs may enter homes in search of more favourable conditions.
They typically gain access through:
- Cracks in foundations;
- Door frames and thresholds;
- Windows;
- Openings around pipes and utility lines;
- Poorly sealed entry points.
Are earwigs dangerous?
Contrary to old popular belief, earwigs do not seek to enter human ears.
They do not transmit diseases, do not damage a home’s structure, and do not represent a danger to occupants.
Their pincers can seem impressive but are rarely capable of piercing human skin.
They are mainly considered an indoor nuisance.
Why does the problem keep coming back?
Earwigs are heavily influenced by environmental conditions.
Factors that contribute to their presence include:
- Excess moisture around the building;
- Mulch or vegetation located close to foundations;
- Dead leaves and organic debris;
- Cracks and openings in the building envelope;
- Damp conditions in basements.
As long as these conditions remain, new earwigs may continue to enter the home.
What should you do if you have earwigs in your home?
When only a few earwigs are present, they can usually be removed by vacuuming or by hand.
To help reduce their presence, we recommend:
- Reducing excess moisture;
- Keeping mulch away from foundations;
- Removing dead leaves and organic debris;
- Correcting drainage problems;
- Sealing accessible cracks and openings;
- Keeping the area around the building clean and well maintained.
In many cases, exterior corrective measures play a more important role than indoor treatments.
