Paper wasps are among the most frequently observed wasps around Quebec residences. They often build their nests under soffits, galleries, balconies, sheds, and other structures protected from the elements.
In Gatineau, Val-des-Monts, Cantley, Chelsea, and throughout the Outaouais region, their activity generally begins in spring when a founding queen starts building a new nest.
Although they play a useful role in the environment by capturing various pest insects, their presence near homes can become problematic when a nest is located near an entrance, relaxation area, or zone frequently used by occupants.
How can you identify a paper wasp?
Paper wasps have a more slender appearance than the yellow jackets commonly found nesting in the ground.
Key characteristics include:
- Size generally ranging from 15 to 25 mm;
- Slender body with a very narrow waist;
- Long legs that dangle beneath the body during flight;
- Coloration varying by species, including brown, reddish-brown, black, and yellow;
- Relatively slow and graceful flight.
Their nest is also highly distinctive:
- Grayish paper-like appearance;
- Visible hexagonal cells;
- Open structure without an outer envelope;
- Typically suspended beneath a protected surface.
Early in the season, nests are small and contain only a few cells. They gradually expand throughout the summer.
Why do paper wasps nest on your property?
Paper wasps seek sheltered locations where they can build their nests protected from rain and wind.
They commonly choose:
- Soffits;
- Porches;
- Balconies;
- Sheds;
- Garden sheds;
- Eaves;
- Covered outdoor structures.
These locations provide excellent protection for colony development.
Adult paper wasps feed primarily on nectar and sugary substances, while also capturing various insects to feed their larvae.
Are paper wasps dangerous?
Paper wasps are generally less aggressive than some other social wasp species.
However, they will actively defend their nest when they perceive a nearby threat.
The risk of stings increases when:
- Someone approaches the nest too closely;
- The nest is accidentally disturbed;
- Work is being performed near the colony;
- A lawn mower or other equipment creates significant vibrations.
Stings typically cause:
- Immediate pain;
- Localized redness;
- Temporary swelling.
For individuals with insect sting allergies, a more serious reaction may occur and require prompt medical attention.
Why does the problem return every year?
Existing colonies do not survive the winter.
However, each spring, newly fertilized queens search for suitable locations to build a new nest.
Structures that have previously hosted paper wasps may remain attractive because they provide:
- Good protection from the elements;
- A stable environment;
- Minimal disturbance;
- Suitable anchor points for nest construction.
This is why some properties seem to attract paper wasps year after year.
What should you do if you have a paper wasp nest?
When a nest is located away from high-traffic areas, it can sometimes be left in place until the end of the season.
However, intervention is generally recommended when:
- The nest is near a door or window;
- It is located above a balcony or patio;
- Children or pets frequent the area;
- Individuals with insect sting allergies are present;
- Wasp activity becomes significant around the property.
Attempting to remove or destroy an active nest without proper equipment is strongly discouraged, as it may trigger a defensive response from the colony.
Our solution
At Maranda Pest Control, we begin by assessing the nest location and the level of risk it presents to occupants.
Our inspection allows us to:
- Identify the species present;
- Assess the size of the colony;
- Determine the level of risk;
- Evaluate nearby traffic areas;
- Recommend the most appropriate course of action.
Depending on the situation, we can perform a targeted treatment to safely eliminate the nest and reduce the risk of future activity.
We also provide preventive recommendations to help reduce favourable nesting locations and discourage future nest construction.
