Pharaoh ant problem in Gatineau, Val-des-Monts or the Outaouais region?

Pharaoh ants are among the most difficult ant species to control in residential, commercial, and multi-unit buildings. Although rarely observed outdoors in Quebec, they can establish themselves durably inside homes, apartment buildings, seniors’ residences, businesses, and institutions.

Pharaoh ant infestations in Gatineau, Val-des-Monts, Cantley, Chelsea, and throughout the Outaouais region are often confused with pavement ant infestations due to their small size. However, their behaviour, reproduction mode, and the methods needed to eliminate them are completely different.

Misidentification can considerably complicate the problem and promote colony spread throughout the entire building.

How can you identify a pharaoh ant?

The pharaoh ant is one of the smallest ant species commonly found in buildings.

Key identifying characteristics include:

  • Approximately 2 mm in length;
  • Pale yellow to reddish-yellow coloration;
  • Very slender, semi-translucent body;
  • Movement in long, discreet trails;
  • Activity often observed in kitchens, bathrooms, and utility areas.

Because of their small size, they are often confused with:

  • Pavement ants;
  • Certain small household ants;
  • Other yellowish ant species.

Accurate identification is essential before beginning any treatment.

Why do pharaoh ants invade your building?

Unlike most ant species found in Quebec, pharaoh ants cannot survive Canadian winters.

They live exclusively inside heated buildings where they have access to:

  • Consistent warmth;
  • Moisture;
  • Food sources;
  • Numerous protected locations for nesting.

Colonies may be found in:

  • Walls;
  • Suspended ceilings;
  • Utility voids;
  • Behind cabinets;
  • Beneath flooring;
  • Around plumbing and heating lines.

Their ability to exploit building structures allows them to remain hidden for long periods of time.

Are pharaoh ants dangerous?

Pharaoh ants do not cause structural damage to buildings.

They do not excavate wood or damage building materials as some other ant species do.

The primary concern is their ability to rapidly colonize a building and contaminate the areas where they travel.

Common issues include:

  • Constant activity in kitchens;
  • Contamination of exposed food;
  • Rapid spread to multiple apartments or units;
  • Difficulty locating nests;
  • Frequent reinfestations when treatments are inadequate.

In apartment buildings, their presence can quickly become a widespread problem if the infestation is not managed properly.

Why does the problem keep coming back?

Pharaoh ants have a social structure that is very different from most other ant species.

A single colony may contain:

  • Multiple queens;
  • Multiple active nests;
  • Thousands of workers distributed throughout different areas of the building.

When disturbed by inappropriate treatments, colonies may split apart. This phenomenon, known as budding, results in the formation of new nests elsewhere in the building.

This is why treatment methods commonly used for pavement ants or carpenter ants can sometimes worsen a pharaoh ant infestation.

An improper treatment can turn a localized problem into a much larger infestation.

What should you do if you have pharaoh ants?

If you notice very small yellowish ants in your home or building, it is important to avoid improvised treatments until the species has been properly identified.

The use of certain repellent insecticides can:

  • Relocate colonies;
  • Fragment nests;
  • Promote the formation of new colonies;
  • Make control efforts more difficult.

The first step is therefore to confirm the species identification and assess the extent of the infestation.

In multi-unit residential buildings, a comprehensive approach is often required to achieve lasting results.
